Inspiring and imaginative Leadership Development Days across the UK
The Cultural Leadership Programme, the Treasury-funded initiative to develop and nurture leaders
within the creative and cultural industries, has launched a second set of Leadership Development
Days, to inspire, challenge and provide support to emerging leaders.
Following the success of ten Leadership Development Days held earlier this year, a further 30
events will be taking place across the UK, starting in October 2007 and running until March 2008.
These places are available to emerging cultural leaders, but the CLP is primarily targeting
potential leaders with disabilities or from black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds or working
in micro-enterprises (one to five employees). Several of the sessions will include signed
interpretation.
The Leadership Development Days are intended to help participants appreciate what
inspirational and authentic leadership looks like and move them on a personal development journey
that is appropriate to them. The intention is to have fun, work hard, and enhance the real and
diverse leadership capacity in the cultural and creative industries.
In addition to these twenty Leadership Development Days, there are ten LDD plus days,
providing a more intensive and advanced level of support. These are aimed at individuals who have
already attended an LDD day, or leaders who are already established, but who recognise a need to
broaden their approach to leadership. The focus for these will be values-led leadership,
authenticity and bravery in leading change.
Stella Kanu attended a Leadership Development Day in Reading in May 2007, and comments, "It
truly is a fantastic programme that I would unreservedly recommend to even the most
seminar/workshop wary professional. I actually feel that I can see a clear way forward - nothing
drastic or even earth shattering - I can just see clearer. Most, if not all of us, found it a
genuinely refreshing space. A fun, focused and realistically pitched day. A resource that has been
long overdue in the creative and cultural sector."
Leadership Development Days form a strand of the broader Cultural Leadership Programme (CLP)
which is targeted at emerging leaders, people mid-way in their careers and cultural entrepreneurs
throughout the UK. CLP is a two-year, £12 million initiative to promote excellence in management
and leadership within the cultural sector.
