From Harlem to Haringey to Huddersfield?
Yorkshire is the latest hotbed of hip hop talent with rising numbers of local hip-hop bands finding their feet and bursting onto the scene. Local Dalton hip hop crew Practical Headz are the latest Yorkshire band to break into a world often overshadowed by the much publicised East coast-West coast rivalry in the USA and the more recent hip-hop success appearing along the banks of the Thames. Whilst the Cockney twang is fast becoming an acceptable style in which to rap, the Yorkshire accent has yet to be recognised as a conventional enunciation in the world of hip hop, a fact which makes the band's recent breakthroughs even more staggering.
Practical Headz comprises of the Bishop, Fingaz, Spida Lee, and the Practical Hand.
Having been awarded the coveted position as one of only 5 urban reviews featured in national and highly-esteemed magazine MOJO, the band have also featured in national publication, The Independent on Sunday, yielding favourable reviews from their own musical icons:
"These guys are great. 'Get the F***k Out' should be the next single. Really good." (Daddy G 'Massive Attack - Various/ Worldwide)
"Four heavy tracks, fresh production and tight rhymes. "Reality" is my pick. Very good." (Aim - Friends and Family/Various - Worldwide)
Practical Headz release their impressive debut album, "Who iz it?", on February 27th through the Timeless Music Project and Huddersfield independent label Chocolate Fireguard who, earlier in the year, featured the crew on the superb 'Interesting Flavours' CD. Chocolate Fireguard have also been celebrating the success of French hip hop unit LA Cedille, a crew who have collaborated with Practical Headz over the years and performed live with them at the associated Timeless Festival event in Huddersfield's Ravensknowle Park.
Practical Headz will release their sixteen-track album, "Who iz it?", on February 27th. Available now locally and via the internet from: itunes, HMV and www.chocolatefireguard.co.uk
